Moana-Inspired Volcano Science Experiment
One of our favorite things to do in our homeschool is to blend learning with fun, and what better way than through a Disney-inspired science experiment? Today, we’re taking inspiration from Moana and creating a homemade volcano! It’s a simple, hands-on way to teach kids about chemical reactions—and it’s just the right mix of education and excitement for our K-2 learners.
What You’ll Need:
Baking soda (about 3 tablespoons)
White vinegar (1/2 cup)
Red food coloring (optional)
A small bottle or cup (to act as the volcano)
Tray or pan to catch the mess
Sand or dirt (for added “island” effect)
Dish soap (to make the eruption foamy)
Instructions:
Build the Volcano: Set up a small bottle or cup on your tray and mold sand, dirt, or even playdough around it to give it that volcano shape. This step is super fun for younger kids because they get to help “build” the island!
Prepare the Eruption: In a separate bowl, mix baking soda and a few drops of red food coloring (to make the "lava"). Add a squeeze of dish soap for an extra foamy effect.
Time for Magic!
Pour the baking soda mixture into the bottle, and then add vinegar. The moment that vinegar hits the baking soda, you’ll have your very own volcano eruption! Watch your kids' eyes light up as their volcano bubbles over with fizzy, foamy lava!
Educational Value:
Science Connection: This experiment is a great introduction to chemical reactions, teaching kids how acids (vinegar) react with bases (baking soda) to create carbon dioxide gas—the bubbly “eruption.”
Fun Facts: Tie in Moana by talking about how volcanoes form real islands, like in Polynesia! It’s a neat way to sneak in some geography with your science.
This quick and easy project keeps younger children engaged and curious. Plus, it’s a fun, memorable way to incorporate Disney magic into learning.
